About Michael

I am a 32-year-old man who resides on 20th Street near 20th Avenue in Altoona.  I was born in Roaring Spring and raised in Hollidaysburg, where I graduated high school in 1995.  I attended Penn State Altoona for two years before finishing at University Park with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Sociology in 2000.  I worked in construction for a few years before coming back to Altoona in 2003.  Six years ago I started working at Ollinger Brothers, who specialize in selling masonry materials.  I am currently the office manager; my main duties include sales, accounts receivable and accounts payable.  I have been married 4 years to my lovely wife Heather, and together we have a 7 month old son and two cats.

I have been interested in politics from a young age.  I have worked in Undergraduate Student Government at Penn State, eventually becoming USG Executive cabinet member for Town Affairs.  Town Affairs addressed issues between Penn State University and the State College Borough.

I was elected to the Blair County Republican Committee 1.5 years ago and since then my interest in local politics has grown.  My interest in the Altoona City Council started a year ago and I have attended most of the meetings since.  Of the non-incumbents running for council I am the only one who has been at the majority of meetings this past year.  The point I make is that I have been paying attention to what issues have come up in the past year.

The reason I want to be on Altoona City Council is that I have a strong desire to see conservative ideals maintained and increased in such a way that the taxes remain low and the city maximizes its revenue spent on services.  I have a strong desire to serve the city and its citizens, to see it become its full potential.  I want Altoona to be a great place to live, to be increasingly friendlier to the business it has and welcoming more.  Altoona needs to be a safe place for our kids to play, for us to walk the streets without thought of crime.  We as citizens need to take responsibility for our community.  We need to stop the demand for drugs in our community.  Decreased crime will help protect our investments in our homes.  That and low taxes will cause others to want to move into our community, to build new houses and renovate existing structures ultimately raising more tax revenue.

I hope you will give strong consideration to whom you elect locally.  I thank you for your time and hope you will vote for me, Michael Haire for Altoona City Council.
