Kathrine
Muller has been an Altoona resident for most of her life. She is a
graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School and holds degrees from West Virginia
University and St. Francis University. She spent most of her career as an early
childhood educator working locally, state-wide and nationally. She
continues to teach early childhood coursework for the Keystone STARS System
through Penn State University.
Currently
she works in Blair County doing school and community Drug & Alcohol
Prevention and has been part of the Student Assistance Program as a team member
and trainer.
First
registering as an Independent at the age of 18, she became a Democrat in
1986. She became active with the Blair Democratic Party in the Spring of
2006 as a Committee Precinct Representative and then as a member of the Blair
County Federation of Democratic Women.
She
has served the Altoona community in different volunteer capacities. She
was a volunteer, Board Member and President of High Hopes Therapeutic Riding
Program from 2001 until December 2007 and continues to advise the more recently
merged program, Dreams Go On Therapeutic Riding Program.
She
is a past President and Board member of the Allegheny Ballet Company, serving
as Chairperson when the Company hosted the Northeast Regional Ballet Conference
in the early 90’s.
She
is the President of Parkview Residents Association and is a current Board
Member of the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance. She is also a member of Friends
of the Altoona Library and the Blair County Historical Association.
As
a member of the Blair Countians for Drug Free Communities, she serves as
Chairperson of the Education Committee. Her involvement with this group
has helped her to develop connections with many of the agencies that provide
services to kids and families in Blair County. It has increased her
knowledge of the positive programming and prevention activities that occur
locally, and at the same time keeps her informed of the many challenges that we
face in the area of substance abuse, violence and crime.
As
a candidate for Altoona City Council she hopes to bring her years of experience
and her commitment to our community to help develop the policies needed to meet
the challenges that our city faces. She would like to find ways to spend tax
revenue more effectively and investigate various grant opportunities to
continue to improve the city of Altoona and build toward a stronger future for
all of our residents.
