MAKING REAL JOBS

Posted at 12:41 PM on April 26, 2008

First you need to create jobs, and to do that you need to bring in the industry, which means lower the tax base on everybody, especially the homeowner. They want to talk about cleaning up the looks of Altoona, but they won’t let the homeowner fix up his house without slapping a tax onto it. That’s irate. If somebody takes money out of their own pocket to make their house better they shouldn’t get taxed at all- they should get tax breaks.

People need to have respect and dignity about themselves, and that starts with having a good job. You need to have a reason to try better because with the way things are going right now, there’s no incentive to make your house look nicer. There just aren’t good jobs where you can make a good living around here. We need good paying jobs here and not only retail because people who want to stay here need a good job to live on. If you’re wondering on where to start let me say this: We have an extension of a major university right here in our backyard. That has to grow and expand as well and people need to understand that.

In order to bring in those jobs that I’ve been talking about is to lower the tax base for homeowners and completely eliminate 1% “annoyance” taxes across the board at the city, county, and state levels. There are townships and other levels of governments to run in this commonwealth, and the citizens in these townships need the chance to make them grow and are the only ones who can do that. Don’t we want to grow? Of course we do. Lower the tax base.

Living needs to be affordable for everybody. A home in this area costs $125,000 on the average, and it’s ridiculous because people don’t have the jobs to even the houses. People are in debt up to their necks. Bring in factories and big industry to the area. How? Give financial incentives for doing business in Blair County by lowering the tax base. I would mention the railroad, but it’s dead and gone. What I see for this generation is the interstate highway, which is taking most of my lifetime just to get to State College.

I too believe that this town needs jobs and I don't mean service jobs, (meaning retail and restaurant, although they are important to our community, not to mention hard- i've worked both) I mean good, well paying jobs. Years prior, there used to be factories. Now, there are very few. Having never worked in a factory, I am not an expert on the pay rate, but I have heard that it is possible to make a decent living working there. But unfortunately, this town seems stagnant on growth of any kind. I have lived here all of my life and with the exception of the new roads and shopping mall, not much has changed since I was a child. The leaders of this commuinity need to put their heads together and find ways to bring expansion to our little town. It seems the only thing they have been able to expand as of late is a way to deal with our drug dealers and addicts, which by the way of our local paper, that really hasn't panned out as well as they had hoped with the no real decrease in the drug raid tally. I do believe that expansion has not earned them their salary!

And speaking of salary, how in the world are people supposed to pay for homes that are priced at $125,000, like "A Concerned Citizen" mentioned, when they are not making enough to cover the bare neccessities! And honestly, $125,000 in todays age seems like a bargain when you look at the current listings. Who is pricing these homes? Have they lost their mind? Come on!

Bottom line is that our town needs growth and with growth comes jobs, which in turn will bring in more tax dollars which will result in no need for raising taxes! I hope our leaders begin to focus on the expasion of our town and stop expanding alternative drug programs. Put them in jail and leave them there! If they are not out, the police will not have any reason to keep picking them up. The result will be the leaders will be able to focus on more important issues, like city growth!!!
