I am utterly taken aback by how easy those who hold the power in our lives manipulate, coerce, and confuse the rest of us. As the Democrats and Republicans continue to harp on pointless non-issues such as Obama’s birth certificate and gay marriage, dire threats to our freedom and security go unchecked. The Patriot Act still exists, US sanctioned torture of “enemy combatants” continues, corporations are being given handouts in the form of our tax dollars, our health care is spiraling into an out of control vortex of inflated prices and deteriorating services, and all the while pundits on both sides continue to sow seeds of distrust among the citizens of our country.
What we need is more unity, more community among free and thinking individuals. We don’t need more polarity, we don’t need more “he said, she said” political sissy fights, and we certainly don’t need to be sending our soldiers off to fight expensive Vietnam style quagmire conflicts in other people’s sand. When we look at our neighbors we should not see Republicans or Democrats, Greens or Libertarians, liberals or conservatives. We should see members of a community who have a vested interest in seeing that community thrive. Differing opinions are held, different religions are followed, different lifestyles maintained. Yet we all live together in one place and one time.
We should be putting our color coded political conflicts down. We should be working as a community toward the common interests of peace, prosperity, and freedom for everyone. War, bailouts, torture, and a polarized citizenship are not conducive towards the lofty goals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Those in power are slowly creating a police state within which none of our Constitutionally granted rights matter. If only we, the people could stop fighting with each other, maybe we could see the truth. Perhaps we could see that the real enemy is not our neighbor.
