On Sunday July 5th we got it right. Over 800 Blair County citizens attended the Blair County Tea Party at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg and heard Dr. John McGinnis hit it out of the park. He told us that we no longer live in a representative republic but are now living in an oligarchy. He termed our representatives as the "Imperious Ruling Class." And he correctly included politicians from both parties and all levels of government.

I do have one criticism of the speakers and that is the idea they put forward that we need to find "leaders" who will change things in government. WE are the leaders, they are the followers. We need to find representatives who will follow the instructions of their employers, US. We need representatives who will make the changes needed to return this government to the people.

Those changes include placing the ruling class under the rules. We need to require our representatives to abide by all of the laws they impose on us. Currently the healthcare bill before the Senate contains a clause that excludes Congress. They will still be under there own, very comprehensive, healthcare plan. You will not have a choice.

Elective office should not be a career. Limit the number of terms politicians can serve. This will prevent one party or group from controlling all aspects of government. It will also enable us to remove the "Imperious Ruling Class" from Washington, Harrisburg, Hollidaysburg and our local governments.

Require all bills before any legislative body to deal with one subject. No more ear marks attached to "stimulus" packages. No more bills so large that they can't even read them before voting for them. Every spending bill, every law must stand on its own merit. And our representatives can then be judged on their votes for these bills.

There are more, many more, changes that are needed but by far the most important is to get rid of our "leaders" and find good "followers." To replace them with people who have that one quality most needed to govern, common sense. To replace them with people who are genuinely interested in serving their constituency, not in amassing as much power and money as possible. To replace them with regular people, just like us.

It is time for us to stand together and pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor to save OUR country. (If you don't know where these words come from, shame on you.) It is time that we take this country back from the Imperious Ruling Class. We can do it with our words and our votes. Call, write and e-mail your senators and representatives. Because, if we fail, then it will fall to our grandchildren to take it back with their blood.
