In the June 2009 issue #17, Crystal wrote a good article concerning former factories and service jobs at the malls.
I believe that the new mall is a perfect example of bad timing. Has anyone else taken a good look at the stores that are already closed? A community needs jobs to keep people shopping.
There are a lot of jobs overseas, where American factories can get better deals on taxes by people who really don’t care about the American economy.

On Sunday July 5th we got it right. Over 800 Blair County citizens attended the Blair County Tea Party at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg and heard Dr. John McGinnis hit it out of the park. He told us that we no longer live in a representative republic but are now living in an oligarchy. He termed our representatives as the "Imperious Ruling Class." And he correctly included politicians from both parties and all levels of government.
I do have one criticism of the speakers and...

I am running for Altoona City Council to hopefully change the way things are run in this area. We have $170,000 dollars going to the Mishler theater from our wonderful U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster and we have a Tour de Toona race that has been going on for ten years.
But I do not see any government official wonder or working towards our future. We the people, not we the elected officials, run this country and we have to act that way. I thought when our current president won, it ...

In response to Commissioner Gority's inquiry for the Board of the Allegheny Mountains Convention and Visitors Bureau, the limitations of the choices of the presented poll leads me to open my response. Our area needs four things to improve it for the residents and visitors. Jobs, jobs, jobs, and transportation.
We live in a depressed area with industry flight and industrial base blight. We have plenty of restaurants, lodges, and malls (stores). Far more than is needed for...

First you need to create jobs, and to do that you need to bring in the industry, which means lower the tax base on everybody, especially the homeowner. They want to talk about cleaning up the looks of Altoona, but they won’t let the homeowner fix up his house without slapping a tax onto it. That’s irate. If somebody takes money out of their own pocket to make their house better they shouldn’t get taxed at all- they should get tax breaks.
Peop...

This beautiful area of Blair County is growing by leaps and bounds in many areas while there is a desperate need for affordable accessible apartments and 24/7 attendant care for physically disabled adults. The elderly have apartments, the mentally retarded have group homes while the physically disabled adults have limited apartments/housing and limited attendant care. I personally think physically disabled adults deserve to live in a place with 24/7 attendant care. It would be a ...

Taxes are one of the only two things Americans will all face; death being the other.
Escaping death is futile so I find the task of tax relief to be much more worthwhile. The government could just cut taxes but that could become harmful.
Instead, taxpayers could be removed from a tax burden through an idea I recently came up with. Suppose that a city could start one or any number of businesses with the intent that the profits of said busines...
